Emergency Survival Training

"Where The Outdoors Is Our Classroom"

From weather disasters and civil unrest, to global pandemics, our world is more in flux today than at any time in recent history. The current state of affairs can make even the most stalwart soul feel apprehansive about the future.Knowing how to make use of the natural world can keep you alive in a survival situation. It can also give you the confidence to stand up to any adversity you might encounter.

Knowledge is power

If you do not already have one, prior to this class you will use the information below to assemble a bug out bag. During the class you will use the contents of the bag to spend a weekend in the forest. In order to improve your comfort, We will also practice bushcraft skills that will allow you to augment what you carry in your bag. Calories are often one of the heaviest items in your bag. We will practice locating wild calories which will improve the palatability of your meals. This ability will allow you to extend your range, and time you can live without replenishing your provisions.

Building/Finding Shelter

In an emergency survival situation shelter is of paramount importance. It not only provides protection from inclimate weather, it can also provide concealment. We will discuss and practice various shelter configurations that will provide both protection and concealment.

Fire

Even in an emergency survival situation fire is extremely important. If you are in a cold climate it can keep you alive. If you need to boil water, you will need a fire to provide that ability. I will teach you a long burning fire that requires minimal firewood, and minimal exertion obtaining that firewood..

Water

In an emergency survival situation the importance of water cannot be over emphasized. If you must be on the go, and stealthy, that precludes you from carrying a buch of water. It will therefore be necessary to have a small supply, plus the ability to collect, store, and purify wild water sources. We will practice some of the skills necessary to satisfy this important need.

Food

In an emergency survival situation, easy calories that can keep you going are essential. I suggest you carry some sort of shelf stable survival food. I have tried so many products and found most to taste like cardboard, or sawdust. WHen facing an emergency situation, even sawdust rations are better than nothing.

Survival Trapping: We will discuss and build various types of deadfalls and snares. Plants can be extremely nutritious, but very few provide the protein and calories your body needs to keep going. I love survival trapping because it affords me the ability to passively secure protein while I busy myself with other survival concerns. We will discuss and build a couple of different types of snares and deadfalls. We will also discuss how these can be altered or tweaked to fit multiple situations.

Survival Fishing: If you are close to water, fish traps can be an excellent passive method of procuring protein. Time permitting, we will discuss trot lines, fish spears, and fish baskets. We will also discuss how snare triggers you will can be adapted to take fish.

Common Edible Plants: Knowing about edible plants can help limit the number of times you have to restock. I will teach you about common widespread nutritious plants. Time permitting, we may even harvest some to augment our survival bars.

Field First Aid

By definition, an emergency survival situation can often involve illness or injury. Your bug out bag will contain items necessary to apply basic first aid. A first aid kit is one of the most important items in your bag. it is equally important to know how to properly use that kit to treat yourself, or a companion. The kit I designed is highly effective. I guess I should clarify, that my first-aid kit is actually 2 first-aid kits. One allows you ton treat traumatic injuries. The second allows you to treat various common illnesses. You can view all of the items in my kit by clicking here

Common Medicinal Plants: There are countless thousands of plants which have medicinal qualities. We will identify and learn to use some of the most common. This knowledge can definitely extend the capabilities of your first-aid kit without adding any weight.

Navigation

With GPS satellites and smart phones, too many people think they do not need to know how to navigate using a map and compass. In an emergency, or SHTF scenario, you could easily become separated form your electronic devices. Or they could become damaged due to water, impact, etc. They can also run out of charge. I have developed an easily understood method of navigation, that unless I am mistaken, no one else is teaching. We will learn to read, understand, and use a topographical map and compass.

What you should bring to class

Minimum items your bug out bag should have

MY survival philosophy revolves around adapatability. It stands to reason my bug out bag design would follow that philosophy. I therefore built a modular go bag. The heart of this modular approach is the kits I created to satisfy each emergency survival need. These kits are as follows.

Shelter kit:

  • Something to sleep under: A 10 x 10 tarp, 25 ft of paracord, and 6 tent stakes.
  • Something to sleep in: A sleeping bag or blankets and ground pad, or air mattress.

  • Fire Kit:
  • A ferrocerium rod, or magnesium fire starter and a small folding saw.

  • Water Kit:
  • A steel water bottle or plastic canteen with a metal canteen cup. A small pocket sized water filter (I carry a Sawyer Mini)

  • First-Aid Kit:
  • You can see the idea behind, and the contents of my first-aid kits Here

  • Navigation Kit:
  • A quality Lensatic, or map Compass. (I recommend a Suunto MC2 compass)

  • Food/Energy Kit:
  • 3 days worth of food. I have tried many offerings and found S.O.S Emergency Rations to be the most palatable.

  • Mess Kit:
  • A pan for cooking, plate, cup, eating utensils. The canteen cup can double as the pot, plate, and cup

  • And you will need a quality bag to hold all of these items.

    *Note*
You must have a properly stocked bug out bag in order to participate in this class.
