This is a non naive species. There are many other species in the Astragalus genus which are native to this country, but they are not used interchangeably, and are for the most part highly toxic.

Traditional Medicinal Uses:
An extract from the root has been shown to boost and restore the immune system. Studies have shown it to even help restore the immune system of people who have undergone chemotherapy. In traditional Chinese medicine it is often to protect and invigorate the immune system, liver, and cardiovascular system. There is also evidence that it is effective at treating breast cancer, lung cancer, diabetes, hepatitis, the common cold, upper respiratory infections, and fibromyalgia. This is an excellent plant to have in your arsenal.

Cautions According To WebMD

Possible Side Effects:
Due to the immune boosting effects of A. membranaceus should not be taken with immune supressing drugs. Care should also be taken by those with autoimmune related disorders such as crohn's disease, lupus, psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, as using this plant may exascerbate your condition. Pregnant or nursing women should not use astragalus root.

Possible Interactions:
Taking astragalus along with cyclophosphamide might decrease the effects of cyclophosphamide.

Astragalus can increase the activity of the immune system. Some medications, such as those used after a transplant, decrease the activity of the immune system. Taking astragalus along with these medications might decrease the effects of these medications.

Taking astragalus might decrease how well the body gets rid of lithium. This could increase how much lithium is in the body and result in serious side effects. Talk with your healthcare provider before using this product if you are taking lithium. Your lithium dose might need to be changed.
