Please note: Young people are encouraged to attend our classes. However, due to liability concerns, anyone under 18 years of age must be accompanied by an adult.

Edible and Medicinal Plant walks

The first option is our basic edible and medicinal plant walk. This is a more leisurely class that will suit even the least intrepid of those among us. Because we will definitely stray a bit from the trail, you should wear clothes and shoes that you do not mind getting dirty. You might also want to consider insect repellant. Plant walks normally take place in Tobico Marsh, which is part of the Bay City Recreation Area in Bay City, MI.

This walk will offer discussion on

  • Common Edible Plants

  • Common Medicinal Plants

Wilderness Skills Course

This class is for the person who wants to learn about all of the basics of wilderness survival. This class is conducted completely in the field. Nature is our classroom. Anyone taking this class will definitely get their hands dirty. The hands on nature of these classes means we must meet on state land rather than local parks. Most parks have a strict no picking policy. Not only are we going to be picking, but we will also make many of the traps we will discuss. As this class takes place over 2 nights and 2 days, participants in this course will need to bring a more substantial kit; that kit will be outlined on the corresponding page. Unless otherwise noted, the Wilderness Skills and Preparedness training course is held near Denton Creek Flooding, just East of Prudenville MI (Houghton Lake).

The course layout and progression is designed to follow the steps in the order they would need to be accomplished in the bush. This course will offer hands on participation in the following subjects.

  • Basic shelter construction

  • Basic fire theory
